Out
of Place
Revealing,
Queen’s Street Education Space, Penzance, Friday 22nd September
6-7pm
Artists Salma Nathoo and Teresa Stevens
As part of tract workshops, ‘Out of Place’: a crash course
in site, performance & live art with Art
Surgery artists/curators Delpha Hudson & Andy Whall,Revealing
was developed especially for the Queen’s street window space.
Developed in a very short time, the use of the site was explored through
movement and cutting. Obscuring the outside with translucent cloth and
inviting the audience to cut the cloth, in order to see inside, the artists
also had tiny embroidery scissors that were used to cut their own and
each other’s clothing.
The space in the window was tiny, hindering the way that they could move
in the space, creating a feeling of enclosure that the audience could
peer into. As the space became warmed with their body heat and breath,
the windows also began to steam up creating a further barrier to revealing
the movement and performance of the artists.
The artists Salma and Teresa say of their work:
We revealed each other in
a shop window, symbolically snipping away eachothers clothing whilst performing
personally revealing unchoreographed movement. The audience could only
see by snipping away at the curtain outside, leaving them to wonder: what
would be revealed or remain concealed? |
